Hey Switchers,
Want to know a hack to have a more successful job search? Getting organised. Getting organised is one of those often overlooked but highly crucial parts of a job search that can have a profoundly positive impact on the success of a job search.
Being more organised and structured in your search can help you reduce stress, increase productivity, iterate your approach and ultimately improve feedback from companies and recruiters. With a more structured job search, the first few CVs you send out might not be the best, but by the time you’re sending your 10th, 15th, or even 20th, your entire approach to your job search would have strengthened.
💡Six ways to get more organised in your job search:
Here are six ways to get better at structuring your job search:
- Decide how urgent your job search is. Before you start your search, decide whether you are; casually looking, looking to make a move within the next 6-12 months, making an industry or career switch, or actively in the job market. Based on the above, you’ll need to adjust how much time you dedicate to your search and your approach. Try to set aside more than one day a week for your job search to give yourself enough time to go deep into the search and build momentum.
- Block out consistent, dedicated time to work on your job search. Block out the same time each week in your diary to dedicate to your job search. For example, commit to looking for new job listings every Tuesday by checking your inbox for the Careers&Things Newsletter 😉 or other search engines.
- Break your search down into manageable sections. Don’t try to do everything in one sitting. Taking an all-or-nothing approach will likely leave you feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, and even resentful of your job search. Instead, try breaking your search down into smaller, more manageable sections. For example, dedicate one week to a comprehensive CV review and update or one week to writing up a stellar cover letter. Doing this will allow you to be more intentional and notice errors in your materials much easier.
- Work on like items together. Doing this is the easiest way to find your rhythm and go deeper in your job search. For example, consider only searching for new job openings on Tuesdays and Thursdays and only applying to jobs you’ve found on Wednesdays and Fridays (to give yourself time to update your job search materials).
- Keep a version history of your CV. This is my favourite hack! Keep track of the CV version you used for each job you apply for (hint: you should not be using the exact same CV for each role you apply for). Doing this will help you to identify which CV version gets you the most responses so that you can focus on improving it until you find the one that lands you the new job.
- Take notes and keep track of everything you’re learning. During your job search, keep track of every new company, role, or skillset you’ve discovered, any new areas of interest you have, and any skills gaps you might have realised you have. Create follow-up/action lists and begin work on closing identified gaps and iterating on the lessons you discover.
We hope the above hacks help you along your job search!
