The importance of a Sponsor for your career progression
Today we’re talking about career progression! Career progression, to me, is a slightly different conversation to career growth. Career progression can be defined as ‘the act of moving forward in your career’ in a way that ultimately allows you to ‘climb the corporate ladder.’ While the conversation about career progression is often coupled with a more holistic conversation that involves career growth and development, career progression is mainly about moving up/ahead in responsibilities and seniority.
While we’re all looking for more meaning and growth in our careers, we’re also looking for that progression. Despite our wanting this progression, it is a topic that we tend to shy away from and reserve strictly for our annual growth conversations with our managers. When was the last time you talked about your career progression with someone other than your manager and within a context other than your quarterly performance review? Do you even know what it will take for your manager to get you your next promotion?
Reserving such conversations only for annual or bi-annual conversations is such a detrimental approach for your career progression because often, there are many unspoken rules of engagements that contribute to your likelihood of moving up in organisations, one of which is having a sponsor.
What is a sponsor? According to Carla Harris, a Sponsor is someone who actively advocates for you, puts your name forward for high-stakes assignments that win notice and promotion and spends their political capital at work in your name. With a sponsor, career progression is more accessible and can often take a little longer to get ahead. A sponsor is a crucial asset to have when thinking about career progression.
