What is a Community Manager/What does a Community Manager do?

A community manager is the bridge between the company and its audience. As Community Managers we help build, grow and manage the company’s online and, depending on the company, offline communities as well.

More specifically, my task is to keep our content creator community empowered and educated. I do this in many ways, including creating informative content to post online and engaging with our creator community on our various social platforms to ensure they are abreast with all developments and opportunities available to them. As such, I act as the moderator of the brand through community support, content distribution, and digital engagement to build brand presence and trust, both online and in-person.

What does a typical day in your role look like?

A typical day for me includes:

  • Content Planning: Putting together content plans and deciding what content needs to be created and rolled out within a given period. This includes ensuring our content calendar aligns with any major events, holidays, etc.
  • Content Creation: I spend the majority of my time making digital content (video, images, etc.) for our various platforms. I have a lot of freedom to experiment within this space, however, the content that I make has to be educational, interactive, and information for the community and be aligned to our overall vision as a company to empower content creators.
  • Engaging with our community: Engaging with all the interaction that we get on our social media platforms and our community feed feature on the Humanz app.
  • Special projects: Planning and building out exciting special projects that explore creating content in innovative, unconventional, and exciting new ways.

What skills, qualifications, and experience are required to get into this role?

I believe that a qualification in Marketing and Communications would be beneficial but it’s not a requirement. I believe, instead, in focusing on crafting/designing your career as opposed to simply focusing on the qualification you have.

I have an Accounting degree but ended up in this space because of my passion for content creation. To supplement my knowledge within this new space, I’ve decided to curate my learning path that will equip me with skills related to Product and Content Marketing.

What advice would you give to people trying to get started in this role?

  1. Discover your why - Find the things that keep you interested and motivated. Find and define the problem that you’re trying to solve in the world. My personal mission is to make Tech accessible. I use this mission to drive the career decisions I take and also to define the tools and skillsets I need to learn.
  2. Never stop learning - The digital marketing industry requires you to be adaptable and open to learning; I’d suggest that you try your best to keep up to date with trends within the space and keep yourself embedded within the community so that you can also learn from others.
  3. Use social media in your personal capacity - It might seem like an obvious one but it is important that you are familiar and comfortable with the various social media platforms that exist. You can do this by building your own social media community using your own social media channels. This will help you understand the tools and trends happening on platforms and also give you insights into what it takes to build out strong and engaging online communities. Doing this might even be the most important thing you need to land your next community manager role so focus on this aspect of the work as well.
